In the UK solar is unviable on a large scale and would be absolutely suicidal. I’d rather not imagine relying on solar power through the cloudy wet winter of 2013/14 when westerly winds brought the storms over the oceans. Thankfully we mostly relied on reliable fossil fuels and nuclear energy with a modest contribution from prayer wheels – the contribution to local wildlife was probably not so modest. Those prayer wheels were of little use a few months earlier when light continental easterly winds came and were constantly backed up by dirty diesel generators. Despite this quite obvious problem the political solution is always more prayer wheels to paper over the cracks.
In Australia solar is a very different matter than the UK, but wind weasels are everywhere and it’s hard not to applaud when they get a good kicking.
